Review by María José Garrido, student on the Master’s Degree in Illustration and Animation
We spoke with María José Garrido, a student on the Master’s Degree in Illustration and Animation at ESDESIGN to learn more about her journey through the school and her experience as a designer.
Tell us briefly about yourself...
I’m a visual artist, illustrator and animator. I’ve loved reading since I was a child, and I’m a big fan of animated films and video games.
What do you currently do?
I have two jobs that bring together my passions. I work at a design school as an academic coordinator for the design and motion graphics degree, and I also work as a designer and illustrator creating cover artwork for articles on science, society and art.
Which project is the most special to you? Why?
The most recent project I’ve worked on — my Final Master’s Project for ESDESIGN. It was very special to me because I was able to work on a topic I’m passionate about, combining my culture and roots with my passion for visual art and character creation.
Where do you find inspiration when designing?
Everywhere! It often comes from unexpected places, but I mainly get inspired by looking at art — illustrations, books, films — and by observing other artists’ work: their techniques, their ideas, how they use colour, and the care they put into their pieces.
Why did you decide to study online? What was your experience like?
I needed something that could fit around my schedule, and being able to combine work and study was essential for me.
What has your experience on the master’s been like?
It’s been a journey of learning and hard work — a path where I learned a great deal, put my creativity into practice, and improved my technique.
What do you take away from the teaching team and your classmates?
A wonderful experience, along with advice and support from everyone. A lot of knowledge from outstanding professionals.
How has the master’s helped you professionally?
It has helped me better understand how the professional design world works, to work with clear objectives, manage my time, and make better use of my skills.
What comes to mind when we talk about design in Barcelona?
The city itself comes to mind — how it has developed as a huge design project and as a hub of creativity, full of studios, museums, schools, and support for both established and emerging designers and artists.
