Student Portfolio: KAJ

KAJ is the project by Sofía Estrada, student of the Professional Master’s Degree in Fashion Business and Brand Management at ESDESIGN.

It is a project that explores the culture of Guatemala through fashion, in which artisanal techniques such as embroidery are combined through colourful prints.

This collection is inspired by Los Barriletes Gigantes de Sumpango, messengers that create a link of communication between the deceased and the living. It is a festival that takes place on All Saints’ Day. The collection is named KAJ, which means sky in the Kaqchikel language, spoken by the population of the western part of the country and in Sumpango. Materials such as recycled cotton, linen taffeta, poplin and cotton threads were used. It is composed of casual garments that can be mixed with each other, with sinuous and straight lines, and relaxed, loose silhouettes.
